2023 Wrapped – the partnership edition
Unveiling My Year in Strategic Partnerships and Alliances
As the year winds down and many are sharing their Spotify 2023 Wrapped, I'm taking a moment to reflect on my partnership story of the year.
Earlier this week I revisited the 8 Secrets for Your Partnerships Playbook in 2023 that I shared a year ago and I decided to see if everything played out as planned.
It's no secret that 2023 has been a rollercoaster of a year, filled with unique challenges, notable achievements, and invaluable insights in the world of partnerships. I will try to dissect both the triumphs and the challenges, as we look ahead to forge new paths in the coming year.
Investing in relationships: My Key Differentiator
The first and maybe the most important is the value of investing in relationships. In our strategic pursuits, we handpicked six partnerships that aligned with IMPACT's strategy, channelling our focus and resources more deeply into these chosen few. The outcomes were as diverse as the partnerships themselves — some flourished, exceeding our expectations, while others encountered unexpected challenges.
But here's what truly stood out amid this array of experiences — the profound significance of establishing genuine human connections in the realm of business. It's a simple litmus test, really: "Can you imagine sharing a casual beer with your partners?" If your gut reaction is "yes," it's a powerful indicator that you're on the right track. It's these personal connections, these moments of authenticity and camaraderie, that can truly set you apart in the business world.
In an industry where relationships often form the bedrock of success, I've come to realise that my commitment to nurturing and cherishing these connections isn't just a strategic choice; it's my key differentiator. It's what sets me apart, and it's where I believe I can truly make a difference. So, as we step into the future, I carry with me this profound lesson — that in a world of partnerships, it's the bonds we build, the trust we foster, and the authenticity we bring to the table that truly defines our IMPACT!
The Delicate Balance in Personalization
Personalisation is a double-edged sword, and this year was a testament to that. In my eagerness to personalise, I sometimes found myself diving too deep, affecting two major partnerships. These experiences were a lesson, but they also taught me the power of stepping back and reassessing. There's a fine line between personalisation and overstepping, and finding that balance is crucial. It's okay to hit the 'never mind' button sometimes. It’s about striking the right balance between personal touch and professional boundaries.
Foster collaboration
This year, fostering collaboration took on an additional layer of complexity due to the macro-economic situations. While navigating these economic headwinds, balancing the demands between sales for more partner leads and partners seeking the same became an even more intricate task. The economic conditions have notably impacted the volume and nature of digital transformation projects, making this balancing act crucial for sustained growth. However, as the year progressed, we began unlocking the secrets to successful collaboration. A special shoutout to our CSO at IMPACT Troels Haugstrup for playing a pivotal role in this journey!
One standout achievement has been the enhanced collaboration between our marketing department and partners, which proved crucial in adapting to these economic shifts. This synergy has not only upheld our market presence but also fortified our reputation as a resilient 'Go-to-Market' partner amidst economic uncertainties.
Utilise data
In our quest to harness the power of data, this year has been marked by experimenting with various software tools. We've delved into Crossbeam for partnership eco-lead growth, and while its full potential is yet to be fully realized, it currently serves as an additional data point in understanding account interactions. Simultaneously, we've been meticulously tracking all partner leads in crm. This not only helps us evaluate our partners from a commercial standpoint but also provides insights into our overall sales process. The challenge remains to integrate these insights effectively to scale our operations. Interestingly, another critical data point has been our marketing development fund. Despite the shifts in the macro-economic landscape, we've managed to increase this fund by 20% compared to 2022. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the economic challenges and underscores the value of strategic data utilisation in navigating uncertain times. As we continue to refine our approach, the goal is to seamlessly integrate these data insights into our sales strategy, optimising our partnership and sales processes for even greater success in the future.
Create an agile approach
This year has illustrated the dynamic nature of the market we operate in. A significant aspect of this dynamism has been the evolution of professional relationships; many of the connections I've nurtured over the years have either transitioned to new roles or been laid off. This reality has underscored the critical importance of maintaining an agile approach, enabling us to swiftly adapt to these ever-changing market conditions.
Our agility isn't just about quick reactions. it's about preserving the value of past investments in relationships, even as the context of these relationships evolves. Our ability to leverage these relationships in new and varied constellations has been a key factor in navigating these changes. As we move forward, this agility will continue to be an invaluable asset, allowing us to pivot as needed and to capitalise on new opportunities that arise from these shifts in the professional landscape.
The lesson here is clear: Investing in relationships is never lost; it's an ongoing process that adapts and evolves, much like the market itself. My focus on being agile has not only helped me maintain these relationships but also explore them in new ways.
Focus on value creation
To be frank, one area where I'm constantly working on enhancing my approach is in the realm of value creation. Crafting a joint value proposition alongside our partners is what sets us apart and truly makes us unique in this landscape. However, it's a challenge to distinctly define and differentiate ourselves amidst a sea of players in the market.
Looking ahead to the coming year, we're embarking on an exciting journey. We're developing a fresh approach (cliffhanger) with select partners that will be our secret sauce — a special ingredient that will set us apart. Our primary aim? Tailoring these initiatives to meet the specific needs of each partner, is a critical step in not only standing out but also in creating mutual value.
If you're intrigued by this prospect, I'd love to share more details in a future post. Stay tuned!
Manage expectations
Managing expectations is a fascinating and crucial aspect of partnerships. It's in these moments, especially when things don't go as planned, shows the strength of a partnership is truly tested. Establishing a clear governance model with defined roles and responsibilities at the outset is essential, especially for those times when things get turbulent. For me, this isn't just procedural; it's about building a foundation of trust and clarity that can weather any storm.
This year has also shown that open communication plays an equal role. Open and transparent dialogue, even when discussing challenges and setbacks, is key to a successful partnership.
Measure performance
As I've mentioned, measuring the performance of partnerships is vital, and in 2023, we've taken a multifaceted approach. We believe in harnessing data to make informed decisions, and three key metrics have been at the heart of our evaluation:
Partner-Generated Leads: Tracking all partner-generated leads in our CRM system has allowed us to understand the impact of our partnerships on the sales funnel. It's not just about the numbers; it's about the quality and origin of these leads. Are they driven primarily by our partners, our sales efforts, or our marketing campaigns? The answer lies in the mix, and it's a combination of all three working in harmony.
Marketing Development Funds: Effective allocation and utilization of marketing development funds are essential in the world of partnerships. We've meticulously monitored and managed these funds to ensure they are not just an expense but a strategic investment. Despite the shifting macroeconomic landscape, we've achieved an impressive 20% increase in our marketing development fund compared to 2022. This accomplishment underscores the value of strategic data utilisation in navigating uncertain times.
Leveraging Crossbeam: In our relentless pursuit of data-driven insights, we've delved into Crossbeam, a tool for partnership eco-lead growth. While we're still exploring its full potential, it currently serves as an invaluable addition to our data arsenal. It aids in understanding the intricate web of account interactions and further enhances our ability to make informed decisions.
These metrics, when combined, paint a comprehensive picture of our partnerships' impact. But our journey in measuring performance is far from over. We are committed to continuous improvement and exploring how we can refine these metrics even further. Our goal is to ensure that every decision we make is rooted in data, moving us away from gut feelings and closer to data-driven excellence.
It's a wrap
As I wrap up my partnership story for 2023, I'm filled with gratitude for the incredible journey we've undertaken together. This year has been a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of strategic alliances and partnerships. From investing in relationships to navigating the nuances of personalization, fostering collaboration, harnessing the power of data, embracing agility, focusing on value creation, managing expectations, and measuring performance, each aspect has contributed to a year of growth, learning, and transformation. Looking ahead to 2024, I am excited and optimistic about the opportunities that lie before us. We've uncovered secrets, faced challenges head-on, and evolved in ways we couldn't have predicted.
